Last Holiday is a 2006 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Wayne Wang and written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman.
The film stars Queen Latifah as Georgia, a humble department store assistant who is told that she has a rare brain condition and only has a few weeks to live. She promptly decides to spend her remaining funds on a luxury holiday in Europe before she dies.
This film has received quite a few mediocre reviews, and I can understand why. There are some superficial moments that feel a bit simplistic and rushed, which is really unfortunate.
However, the message at the end is truly beautiful, and everything comes together nicely. I also expected a different ending, but the plot twist was well done. It’s a typical American romantic comedy, with some great insights, like Georgia’s line about how life is too short to keep walking around with your head down. It’s also a clear lesson that having everything in order doesn’t necessarily mean you’re happy.
By the end, I did shed a tear. The film really gave me a moment afterward to think, “You can achieve what you want,” a kind of refreshing sense of hope.
