I hope you already know this movie, it’s from 2005. And it’s just an exciting, funny, dramatic, sexy and fun movie to watch!
The most beautiful woman on earth is Angelina Jolie. And one of the most handsome men on earth: Brad Pitt.
But if you haven’t seen the movie yet, this is what it’s all about: John and Jane Smith seem like a decent American couple at first glance. They have a beautiful home, successful careers and a seemingly comfortable life. Behind the front door, however, their marriage is quite broken. The conversations are superficial, irritations are concealed and eventually they even end up with a relationship therapist.
What they don’t know about each other is that they are both professional assassins. John and Jane also work for competing organizations. When they have to take out the same target during a mission, they slowly begin to suspect who their partner really is.
Not long after, they are ordered to kill each other. This leads to an explosive game of cat and mouse in which their entire house is being renovated – and certainly not by a contractor. As John and Jane try to take out each other with guns, knives and clever tricks, they discover how much they still feel about each other.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is more than just an action movie. The story is also an exaggerated metaphor for a marriage in which partners do not communicate honestly. Their firefights are actually marital quarrels, but with rocket launchers.
The film was directed by Doug Liman, who is also known for The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. The screenplay was written by Simon Kinberg, who would later collaborate on several films from the X-Men series.
With an estimated budget of about $110 million, it was a major Hollywood production. That turned out to be a good investment: the film made almost half a billion dollars worldwide!
And of course I have a bunch of fun facts!
It was almost Gwen Stefani who got the role of Jane Smith. I didn’t know this either! What I did know is that Angelina and Brad got to know each other better on set and then became one of the most famous couples in the world: Brangelina.
And what struck me the last time I saw the movie was that I thought there was more material at the end… and that may be true because there is a lot of scrapped material! There is an extensive DVD series that contains 11 deleted scenes!
There are also some small bloopers in the official film. For example, an extra arm can be seen when John pushes the prisoner into the back of a van… also changes the shape of the hole of the smashed window… Angelina also wears a watch one at the next… but it doesn’t matter! I didn’t know these bloopers until I looked them up!
The story of Mr. & Mrs. Smith is not particularly realistic and does not try to be. The appeal lies in the combination of action, romance and dry humor. Pitt plays John as a charming, somewhat sloppy daredevil, while Jolie turns Jane into a cool and highly organized professional.
That contrast makes for the best moments. Even during a wild chase, the Smiths argue as if they were arguing about the dishes at home. The film shows in a playful way that love and irritation are sometimes surprisingly close together.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is ultimately a stylish, noisy and entertaining action film about two people who only manage to save their marriage when they stop lying – and start shooting at their enemies together.
This movie is in my top 5 favorite movies! Have you seen it yet?
