Released in 2017. Directors: Kip Andersen & Kreegan Kuhn
A documentary that, in short, talks about how meat may not be as good for you as you might have thought.
The filmmaker, Kip, investigates it himself, and this is clearly shown. He asks logical questions to large organizations, but they refuse to engage with him. Which is quite strange if you ask me.
My boyfriend and I watched this documentary sometime in 2023 when we were both sick and lying on the couch. We decided to give it a try; at worst, we would have gone a month without meat. If we didn’t like it, we could just start eating meat again. Whether we are still vegan is revealed at the end. 😉
The documentary starts with an interesting part of an interview with Dr. Robert Ratner from the American Diabetes Association. He’s asked why they promote meat on their website, even though various studies have shown that meat can contribute to diabetes.
Dr. Ratner reacts quite agitatedly, stands up, removes the microphone, and walks away. The entire interview is shown from 43:00, but I recommend watching from the start.
35 people share their views, including several doctors, dietitians, lawyers, and researchers. There are also world champions, athletes, and even Steve-O makes an appearance!
Additionally, three patients are featured, each with different ailments, ranging from diabetes to heart disease, asthma, and arthritis. These people are on a lot of medication. They switch to a vegan diet, and within two weeks, all of them have halved or completely stopped taking their medication. Personally, I found this a bit exaggerated, but these people feel better, and that’s what matters.
A few other interesting points discussed:
1 egg is equivalent to 5 cigarettes because it’s a small bomb of fat and cholesterol. You can probably guess that this is not good for you.
Milk is for calves. It’s full of hormones and fats, and it’s not meant for us. It does Not help strengthen bones.
One thing that really stood out to me was how Kip showed that organizations selling cancer-causing food conduct their own research into their products to make them appear less harmful.
And then there’s the issue of the government receiving money from large companies to promote these products. The result is that people get sick, and hospitals get more work and revenue… I knew everything ultimately revolves around money, but it still amazes me.
You’ve probably seen videos of chickens living 20 to a square meter. The same is true for pigs. Keep in mind that they live among other pigs, some of which are dead… of course, this leads to diseases!
And then consider that these animals produce more waste than the entire East Coast of the U.S., which is sprayed in North Carolina, less than a mile from where people live. The documentary even refers to this as racism.
It’s even to the point that there’s a “Cheeseburger Law,” based on the commonsense consumption act, meaning you should know that what they make is bad for you, so if you get sick, it’s your own fault.
At the end, there’s a segment about a young man who has a healthy substitute for eggs. Sounds interesting, right?
But it takes a dark turn. Within the government, business emails were found with messages ‘joking’ about how this young man (and competitor) should be killed…
And whether people are meat-eaters or plant-eaters is simply debunked at the end: our teeth are all the evidence we need. Humans are plant-eaters.
I quickly looked up some statistics about diabetes in Europe. According to Statista.com: “Number of diabetics in Europe in 2021: 61 million.” Where they get their data from, I have no idea.
I definitely recommend this documentary! It’s super interesting, and I’m also really curious about what you think of it!
As for whether my boyfriend and I are still vegan 🌱 : partly. Yes, there’s quite a bit of criticism about it, which I understand. I also often think, ‘you either do it right or you don’t do it at all.’
But it’s still a bit too difficult to be fully vegan.
So we call ourselves flex-vegans. We eat vegan when we can, which is fortunately quite often! And we’ve definitely noticed benefits! For example, my skin is much calmer, fewer pimples, and my boyfriend no longer has stomach pains, as he turned out to be lactose intolerant. By the way, most of humanity is lactose intolerant, and this is also discussed in the documentary!
