A few typical comments you hear when you tell people you live in Lisse:
“It must be beautiful living there with all those flowers! 🌸”
“It must smell amazing! 🌷”
“It must be really busy during the season! 🚶♀️🚶♂️”
Lisse is the heart of the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region). It’s world-famous for its colorful flower bulb fields in springtime. The biggest attraction is Keukenhof, one of the largest flower gardens in the world! Every year, we get millions of tulips, hyacinths, and many other gorgeous flowers. Lisse is a “village” with around 23,000 inhabitants.
I always have to laugh at those comments, because when you live in Lisse, you’d kind of expect people to know what it’s really like 😅.
And what I think a lot of tourists don’t realize is that most Dutch people are actually very good at complaining 😬. That, of course, also applies to this little village full of social cohesion.
I haven’t lived here very long myself, and at first, I thought it wouldn’t be too bad…
Then spring came 🌼.
Because that’s when the tourists come. And there are millions!
Of course, people here live with it, but still — I regularly see angry villagers honking and shouting at mostly innocent tourists 😂.
And I say mostly, because… well… a lot of them are guilty. Guilty of walking through the flower fields 🚷.
And that’s really not allowed!
I get it — it’s insanely beautiful, but that fence is there for a reason… you’re literally walking over someone’s income with your dirty shoes 👟💸.
So yeah, I understand that farmers here sometimes get annoyed by clueless tourists.
Sure, it gets crowded, and you have to allow for a bit more travel time than usual — but hey, it’s part of life here 🚗🚶.
What actually bothers me more is when the season hasn’t even started yet and all the fields have been fertilized. That smell… it’s really not healthy 🤢.
And of course, they generously spray pesticides to keep bugs away from the pretty plants — which probably isn’t too healthy either… but hey, that’s a whole other discussion 😅.
I’ve now lived here for about a year, and honestly — it reminds me a bit of Zandvoort in the summer ☀️, where I grew up. It gets insanely busy there too, especially with German tourists 🇩🇪.
So in that sense — it doesn’t really bother me.
Why should it? I can’t change it anyway 🤷♀️.
And besides… my boyfriend and I are moving away from Lisse soon 🏡✨.

Een paar typische opmerkingen wanneer je verteld dat je in Lisse woont. Het hart van de bollenstreek.
Wereldberoemd vanwege de kleurrijke bloembollenvelden in het voorjaar. Met als grootste trekpleister, De Keukenhof, een van de grootste bloementuinen ter wereld! Elk jaar weer hebben we miljoenen tulpen, hyacinten en nog veel meer mooie bloemen. Lisse is een ‘dorp’ met ruim 23.000 inwoners.
En wat veel toeristen (denk ik) niet weten is dat de meeste Nederlanders goed kunnen zeuren. Zo natuurlijk ook in dit dorpje vol met sociale cohesie.
Ik woon hier zelf nog niet zo lang en ik dacht dat het wel mee viel, tot het voorjaar begon… want dan komen de toeristen. En het zijn er miljoenen!
Ik kan er wel om lachen want als je in Lisse woont dan zou je toch verwachten dat iedereen dit wel weet en ermee leeft, maar toch zie ik regelmatig boze dorpelingen toeteren en schelden naar meestal onschuldige toeristen.
En ik zeg meestal omdat, er zijn er ook erg veel wel schuldig. Schuldig aan lopen door de velden. En dat is niet de bedoeling! Ik snap het, het is onwijs mooi, maar dat hek staat er niet voor niets… je wandelt toch even over iemand zijn inkomsten met je vieze schoenen…
Ik snap dat de boeren hier daarom soms wel een hekel hebben aan de onwetende toeristen.
Natuurlijk, het is even druk en je moet een wat langere reistijd hanteren dan gewoonlijks maar ach, dat hoort erbij. 🤷🏼♀️
Persoonlijk erger ik mij er wel aan wanneer het seizoen nog niet begonnen is en alle velden zijn bemest… die lucht is echt niet gezond. 😷
Sowieso word er natuurlijk rijkelijk gespoten met gif om ongedierte weg te houden van de mooie plantjes en ik denk dat dat ook niet zo gezond is… Maar goed dat is een andere discussie…
Ik woon hier nu een jaartje en het doet mij eigenlijk denken aan Zandvoort in de zomer, daar ben ik opgegroeid. Dan is het daar ook mega druk met toeristen, voornamelijk Duitse toeristen.
Dus wat dat betreft, ik erger mij er niet zo aan. Waarom zou ik? Ik kan het toch niet veranderen 😊
En bovendien gaan mijn vriend en ik ook verhuizen, weg uit Lisse. 😝
