If you enjoy action movies filled with ancient mysteries, dangerous villains, exotic locations and impossible stunts, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life is definitely a movie worth checking out. 🗺️ Released in 2003, this action-adventure movie stars Angelina Jolie as the famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. It is the sequel to Lara Croft: Tomb Raider from 2001 and was directed by Jan de Bont. The movie runs for about 117 minutes and combines action, adventure, fantasy and thriller elements. 🎥
🏺 What is the story?
The story begins in Santorini, Greece, where Lara discovers an ancient underwater temple after an earthquake. Inside the temple, she finds a mysterious golden orb. The orb is not just an ordinary treasure: it is believed to be a map leading to the legendary Cradle of Life, where Pandora’s Box is hidden. 🌊
The problem is that Lara is not the only person looking for it. The dangerous scientist Jonathan Reiss, played by Ciarán Hinds, wants to find Pandora’s Box because he believes its deadly power can be used as a biological weapon. Reiss is willing to do almost anything to get it. 😈
Lara therefore has to travel around the world to find the box before Reiss does. Along the way, she recruits Terry Sheridan, played by Gerard Butler. Terry is Lara’s former partner and love interest, but there is a slight problem: he has betrayed her in the past, so Lara isn’t exactly sure whether she can trust him. 🤔
Their adventure takes them through places including China, Hong Kong and Kenya, with plenty of fights, explosions, car chases, diving, shooting and spectacular stunts along the way. Eventually, Lara and Terry have to face Reiss and his men at the Cradle of Life itself. 💥
🎭 Who are the actors?
The biggest name in the movie is obviously Angelina Jolie, who plays Lara Croft. Jolie fits the role particularly well because Lara needs to be both intelligent and physically capable, and the character spends most of the movie fighting, climbing, diving or escaping from something. 💪
Gerard Butler plays Terry Sheridan, Lara’s former partner. Butler brings a mixture of charm and toughness to the character. Ciarán Hinds plays the villain Jonathan Reiss, while Noah Taylor plays Bryce, Lara’s technology expert and friend. 🎭
Other important cast members include Djimon Hounsou as Kosa, Til Schweiger as Sean, Simon Yam as Chen Lo, and Chris Barrie as Hillary, Lara’s butler. 👥
🤪 Fun facts and bloopers
One of the most interesting things about the movie is that some of its crazy-looking action scenes were created using a mixture of real stunts, sets, wires and computer-generated effects. 🎬
For example, the scene where Lara appears to ride a shark 🦈 was filmed in a 60-by-40-foot blue-screen water tank. Angelina Jolie was pulled through the water using wires, while effects were later added to make the scene look more realistic. 🌊
There are also quite a few funny movie mistakes. According to lists of continuity errors, Lara’s injuries sometimes magically disappear. In one scene, she is injured by broken glass, but shortly afterwards the marks and blood are gone. There are also scenes where her hairstyle changes between shots, and her motorcycle apparently changes from a road bike into a dirt bike! 😂
Another amusing mistake involves geography. Lara and Terry travel around Hong Kong at an impressive speed, apparently moving between different parts of the city much faster than would actually be possible. There are also some questionable animal details, including mandrills appearing near Mount Kilimanjaro, even though they naturally live much farther west in Africa. 🐒
⭐ My review
Overall, The Cradle of Life is not a movie you watch because you want a completely realistic archaeological adventure. It is much more about entertainment. The story is dramatic and sometimes completely ridiculous, but that’s part of the fun. 🍿
The best part of the movie is probably Angelina Jolie. She makes Lara Croft feel confident, independent and capable, while still giving the character some personality. The action scenes are also entertaining, especially the underwater sequences and the huge finale. 💪
On the other hand, some parts of the story are predictable, and the movie occasionally takes its ridiculous ideas very seriously. Pandora’s Box, ancient civilizations, deadly viruses and secret temples are all thrown together into one enormous adventure. 😮
Still, if you like early-2000s action movies, The Cradle of Life has plenty to offer. It has a charismatic lead actress, a memorable villain, exotic locations, ridiculous stunts and enough explosions to keep things moving. 💥
