Even though I was pretty invested in Mad Men, I ended up stopping watching it. The way the secrets were revealed was so boring that I kind of felt like it was a waste of time to keep watching 😅 Sorry to all the Mad Men fans.
A few days ago, I came across this show, and the three-sentence description was enough to grab my interest, so I immediately started watching. I’m only on episode 5 so far, but I’m definitely curious to see how it unfolds.
They do a good job of keeping the main storylines in the background—you’re constantly reminded that there’s still more going on, if that makes sense?
If you are looking for a series with courtroom drama, complicated relationships, politics, clever dialogue and plenty of twists, The Good Wife is definitely one to add to your watchlist.
But what makes The Good Wife so addictive? Is it a courtroom series, a political drama, or a story about relationships and starting over? The answer is: a little bit of everything.
The Good Wife premiered in the United States on 22 September 2009 and ran until 8 May 2016. The series was created by married writing team Robert King and Michelle King.
The series has seven seasons and 156 episodes, with most episodes running for around 40–46 minutes. It originally aired on CBS and became one of the network’s most critically acclaimed dramas.
And yes, despite the title, The Good Wife is much more than a story about being someone’s wife.
The story follows Alicia Florrick. Alicia has spent years as a stay-at-home mother while her husband, Peter Florrick, has built a successful political career.
Then everything changes.
Peter, a prominent Chicago politician, becomes involved in a very public sex and political-corruption scandal and ends up in prison. Alicia is suddenly forced to rebuild her life and provide for her family. After spending around 13 years away from the legal profession, she returns to work as a lawyer at a prestigious Chicago law firm.
From there, the series develops into a fascinating combination of courtroom cases, office politics, family drama, romance and American politics.
Alicia has to prove herself again in a competitive legal world while dealing with the consequences of her husband’s scandal. She also has to figure out who she is now that the life she once knew has completely changed.
And that’s one of the best things about the show: Alicia isn’t simply trying to save her marriage or repair her husband’s reputation. She’s discovering her own identity.

Who stars in The Good Wife?
The series has an impressive ensemble cast, and several of the actors became particularly closely associated with their characters.
Julianna Margulies plays Alicia Florrick, the central character. Her performance as Alicia earned her multiple awards, including a Primetime Emmy.
Chris Noth plays Peter Florrick, Alicia’s husband.
Josh Charles plays Will Gardner, Alicia’s old friend and an important figure in her professional life.
Christine Baranski plays Diane Lockhart, one of the show’s most memorable characters. Diane is an exceptionally successful lawyer, confident, intelligent and formidable — and Baranski brings plenty of charisma to the role.
Matt Czuchry plays Cary Agos, a young and ambitious lawyer who becomes an important part of Alicia’s professional world.
Archie Panjabi plays Kalinda Sharma, the firm’s mysterious and highly resourceful investigator. Kalinda quickly became one of the show’s fan-favourite characters.
Makenzie Vega and Graham Phillips play Alicia’s children, Grace and Zach.
The series also features a long list of impressive guest stars, including actors such as Michael J. Fox, Carrie Preston and Matthew Goode.

1. The story was inspired by real political scandals
The creators Robert and Michelle King got the idea for the series partly from real-life American political scandals. They were particularly interested in the familiar image of a politician’s wife standing beside her husband during a public scandal.
But they asked an interesting question: What happens to the wife after the cameras disappear?
They also noticed that several real-life women involved in political scandals were lawyers who had put their own careers on hold while supporting their husbands’ ambitions. That idea became the foundation for Alicia’s story.
2. It won five Primetime Emmys
The show wasn’t just popular with audiences — critics and award voters loved it too. The Good Wife won five Primetime Emmy Awards, including awards connected to performances by Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi.
3. There are 156 episodes!
With seven seasons and 156 episodes, The Good Wife is perfect if you’re looking for a series you can really settle into.

At its heart, though, it is a story about reinvention.
Alicia starts the series in a situation she never expected to be in. She has to return to a career she left behind, compete with younger lawyers, deal with public humiliation and make difficult decisions about her family and future.
The title The Good Wife almost becomes a question in itself: What does being a “good wife” actually mean when your entire life changes?
That’s what makes the series still feel relevant today.
If you enjoy intelligent dramas with strong female characters, complicated relationships and just enough courtroom drama to keep things moving, The Good Wife is well worth giving a chance. Just be warned: one episode can very easily turn into five.
