As I said earlier in THIS review about this series; it’s great!
I am going to put a full summary here and below that my honest opinion.
Yellowstone is a modern Western drama that explores power, legacy, land, and family loyalty in contemporary America. The series centers on the Dutton family, owners of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch — the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States — located in Montana near Yellowstone National Park.
At the heart of the story is John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), a hardened and calculating rancher determined to protect his land at any cost. To John, the ranch is more than property — it’s heritage, identity, and legacy. The land has been in the Dutton family for generations, and he sees himself as its guardian against a world that is rapidly changing.
The Central Conflict;
The Dutton ranch sits in one of the most desirable areas in the country, making it a target from all sides:
🐎Wealthy real estate developers want to turn the land into luxury resorts and airports.
🐎Politicians manipulate zoning laws and public policy to serve corporate interests.
🐎The neighboring Broken Rock Indian Reservation, led by Chairman Thomas Rainwater, seeks to reclaim ancestral lands.
🐎Environmental activists and outside investors challenge the cattle industry itself.
Every season intensifies these power struggles, blending corporate warfare, political maneuvering, and physical violence.
The Dutton Family;
The emotional core of Yellowstone lies in the complicated dynamics between John and his children:
Beth Dutton, she is fiercely intelligent, emotionally volatile, and utterly loyal to her father. A finance expert, she uses corporate strategy and psychological warfare to destroy anyone who threatens the ranch. Beneath her ruthless exterior lies deep trauma and unresolved pain.
Jamie Dutton, he is an attorney and aspiring politician who constantly struggles for his father’s approval. Intelligent but insecure, Jamie’s ambition and resentment create some of the show’s most dramatic family conflicts.
Kayce Dutton, he is a former Navy SEAL torn between two worlds: his loyalty to his father’s ranch and his commitment to his wife Monica and her Native American heritage. Kayce’s storyline explores identity, culture, and moral conflict.
The Ranch Hands 🤠
The show also highlights the cowboys who work the ranch, many of whom are “branded” with the Yellowstone symbol as a mark of loyalty. Characters like Rip Wheeler embody the code of the ranch — loyalty above all else. Rip, John’s enforcer and Beth’s love interest, represents old-school cowboy justice in a modern world.
Themes;
While Yellowstone features classic Western elements — horses, cattle drives, open plains — it is fundamentally a drama about:
🟤The clash between tradition and progress
🟤The corruption of political and corporate power
🟤Family loyalty versus personal ambition
🟤Violence as a tool of protection and control
🟤The fading myth of the American West
The series portrays a version of America where land equals power, and power must be defended by any means necessary.
Tone and Style;
Created by Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone combines sweeping cinematography of Montana landscapes with intense character-driven storytelling. It’s gritty, emotional, often brutal, and morally complex. Characters operate in shades of gray, and survival frequently comes at a high cost.
In short, Yellowstone is not just a cowboy show — it’s a modern American saga about legacy, control, and what happens when an old way of life collides with a changing nation.
And then my opinion,
I think it’s a great series. Quite some plottwists and humour too… the ONLY thing I found a bit sad is that there were some loose ends here and there. I had some questions with people that just disappeared and then showed up later like nothing happend. And I do think Jamie was a good guy from the start but his attitude changed in the series, that could have been portrayed better maybe. But I’m no filmmaker so, don’t take this too serious!
I loved that they used (I think) the same actors as they got older, the views, the small roles, the details iin everything and the end was also beautiful.
It’s a good possibility that I will watch the other series about Kayce Dutton as I think that’s sort of part of it, but I will get back on that later.
Thanks for reading 🩷
