This man has become one of my favorite writers π
Moral Ambition was the first book I read from him, which immediately caused me to buy more of his books.
About this book; on the back is written;
The problem is not that we don’t have it right, the problem is that we don’t know how to do it better. In this day and age, with purchasing power as the last ideal, historian Rutger Bregman sketches new views. From a basic income for everyone to a 15-hour working week, from a world without borders to a world without poverty – it is time for the return of utopia. Let yourself be taken on a journey through history and get to know ideas that go against the zeitgeist, right through the old dividing lines of left and right. This is an overwhelming book that turns your worldview upside down.
I’m going to be honest, I found the first half of the book easier to read than the second half.
Nevertheless, this is definitely recommended again!
A small summary;
This book shows that much of what we now seem impossible to find began as a bold idea – think of the end of slavery or the introduction of democracy – and eventually became a reality.
Rutger takes you on an inspiring journey through history and presents radical but hopeful ideas that can make our society fairer and freer.
These include proposals such as an unconditional basic income for all, a shorter working week, a fairer tax system and even a world without poverty and borders.
Using clever examples and thorough substantiation, the book makes it clear that utopian visions do not only have to remain dreams, but can point the way to a better future in which people have more freedom, dignity and opportunities.
And below are some things I have underlined;
β’ Perfection is the enemy of good.
β’ Scarcity takes possession of your mind. People act differently when they feel a sense of lack.
β’ The misconception is that a life without poverty is a privilege you have to work for, rather than a right for everyone.
Thanks for reading and please read this book! π©·
P.S. I read it in Dutch, then the title is: Gratis geld voor iedereen
