Of course I originally started watching this series because Kaitlin Olson is in it 😙 …and I read that in season 2 she starts dating her co-star Rob McElhenney, which is exactly where I’m at right now. I just thought it would be fun to see how their relationship actually started — and they’re still together almost 20 years later! ❤️
Apparently their kids even make small appearances in the show too 👀

By the way, this is also one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms in American TV history, while simultaneously being one of the most chaotic, cynical, and cult-like comedy series ever made 😭🍻

The show follows a group of friends — four guys and one woman — who run an Irish bar in Philadelphia called Paddy’s Pub. And instead of the characters learning lessons or growing as people… they somehow just become worse and worse over time 💀 and that’s exactly the joke.

The main characters:
Charlie Day as Charlie Kelly — a half-genius, half-feral rat catcher 🐀
Glenn Howerton as Dennis Reynolds — a narcissistic sociopath with a god complex 😭
• Rob McElhenney as Mac — an insecure macho guy constantly having identity crises 💪
• Kaitlin Olson as Dee Reynolds — Dennis’ sister, a wannabe actress who’s just as awful as the rest 🎭
Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds — Dennis and Dee’s completely unhinged businessman father 😂💸

(I stole most of these descriptions from the internet because I’m only on season 2, so it’s still hard for me to describe everyone properly myself 😅)

What makes the series unique is that nobody is actually likable. Sometimes it genuinely feels like the entire show is improvised, which somehow makes it even funnier 💀

And because the show has been around for so long, it has tons of recurring jokes and running gags. It started in 2005 and they’re still going strong!

Visually, the series started out extremely low-budget. Season 1 basically cost nothing and was filmed mostly with cheap cameras 📹 That raw feeling honestly became part of the charm. Later the production got bigger, but the energy stayed the same:
▫️ lots of “improvised” energy
▫️ weird close-ups
▫️ awkward silences
▫️ sudden screaming
▫️ complete social disasters 💀

Apparently the show also built a massive online cult following over the years because it’s been running for so long. There are endless memes, short clips, GIFs, Reddit fandoms, podcasts, and quotes people repeat nonstop!

I live in the Netherlands, so I honestly think that’s why I barely knew anything about this series before 😅

The actors also have a podcast called The Always Sunny Podcast where they talk about specific episodes, behind-the-scenes stories, and how certain scenes were created! 🎙️ (I’m definitely going to listen to that too, so expect a link here eventually 👀)

Personally, this is the kind of show I watch while doing something else at the same time. Since it’s older and every episode is kind of its own thing, it’s not constantly super stimulating the whole time — if that makes sense 😅 with all due respect!

And honestly… it’s kind of insane seeing how Kaitlin looked back then versus now because she somehow became even prettier over the years 😍✨
And Rob definitely had a glow-up too 👏🏼

Thanks for reading! And did you already know this show? 🍻
